The beautiful hand engraved inscription says “Robert Montgomery from Edna May, 28th April ’99”. And if you research a bit you’ll find that Hollywood had both a Robert Montgomery and an Edna May (Oliver), but that Edna was born in 1883, so I doubt she gifted this to Robert at age 16, buy hey - who knows. In that case they was in a Hollywood production together in 1935. But there was also another possible Edna May, Edna May Pettie (pictured), who made her acting debut in 1895, was a famous postcard beauty and appeared in several plays thereafter especially in London, and this piece is English...
Wikip says: “May was known for her beauty and received tremendous attention from male admirers. In 1907, she married millionaire Oscar Lewisohn and retired from the stage.” But who was Robert Montgomery then? Well, the whole mystery is for its next caretaker to solve. No matter what and who, it’s an amazing piece of history and beauty.
